Lacquered timber lidded box with painted bird motif
c. 1915Rectangular, lidded, lacquered, lightweight timber box with cut off corners. It features a bird standing on a perch in earthy tones painted on the lid.
The inside is lined with olive green fine weave fabric. There is some brown staining on the fabric of the bottom section of the box.
The base has some black lettering printed beneath the lacquer, but it isn't possible to read.
This timber box with bird motif came with the stick pin. They were sold as being Turkish souvenirs bought by a soldier during World War One. However, very similar lacquered boxes were produced in China, so it may be that the person just kept the stick pin in the box and they weren't purchased from the same place. The date of production is therefore unknown.
