Drabbles Buildings, Bay View Terrace, Claremont

Overview

Photograph mounted on light brown card with embossed border. Drabbles buildings on the eastern side of Bay View Terrace, Claremont. On the left is a two storey building. Its balcony is roofed and has timber balustrade. The newer brick building has pilasters and three upper storey windows: the central double one with triangular moulded hood and the outer single ones with rounded mouldings. The central raised pediment bears the name [W. DRABBLE] and those either side have [ESTd] and [1885]. Painted on the facia of the verandah over the footpath is [HARDWARE W.DRABBLE MERCHANT]. This is repeated in smaller lettering on the return. On the right is the opening to a lane with two white posts, closed cyclone gates and posters pasted on the side of the building advertising films to be shown at the adjacent theatre..Under the verandah are windows including an 'island window' filled with displays. Tramlines are visible on the road and on the upper left is a support for telegraph lines, a street light and power lines for trams.

Historical information

New Drabbles building was opened in 1924, the year the tram service also commenced. The lane on the right has been redeveloped as Old Theatre Lane.
