Overview

Round silver medal engraved text on reverse side of medal. On front is the raised image of a male figure in shorts and a t-shirt about to kick a round football with their right foot. The background is a raised design based upon the stitching pattern of a round football. On the reverse side is a flat surface with engraved text. [ ARMADALE S.C. / KOSOVO / CARNIVAL / JULY 1999 ]. Around the edge of the bottom half is a laurel decoration. At top of medal is a raised tab with a hole in the middle. A metal ring has been clamped through the hole in the tab.

Historical information

The medal was presented to members of the Armadale Soccer Club for participating in the Kosovo Carnival in 1999. The carnival was a fund-raising event to help support people affected by the Kosovo War (February 1998 - June 1999). The war was fought between forces from the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia who controlled Kosovo in the 1990s and the Kosovo Liberation Army with support from the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO). Over 13,000 were either killed or went missing during the conflict and 1.2 million people were displaced.

Statement of significance

This object is part of a collection that tells the story of the many different community sporting organisations that have and continue to exist in the City of Armadale. Sport has played an important role in bringing communities together and building identities.With the influx of new residents to the region in the late 1800s local sporting clubs began to form as people came together looking to form a community through shared sporting interests. Sporting clubs can also show how established communities begin to grow and diversify with clubs being formed by new emerging communities.
