These bandages were issued to Sylvia Bailey who volunteered as an air raid warden and was a member of the Armadale Women's Emergency Corp. during WWII. Following the entry of Japan into the war in December 1941 there was considerable fear and concern that Japan would attack Perth. Part of the defence systems put in place was the recruitment of volunteer air raid wardens, air craft spotters, the establishment of search light crews and the formation of the Armadale Women's Emergency Corp.
