SPRINKLER, LAWN - 'CHAMPION'

c. 1955 - 1980
Overview

Unit consists of a cast body consisting of a flat pyramid to the rear and a solid ribbed extension at the front, which has a grooved steel wheel mounted on a turnable castor bracket.
At the back of the body is an axle which has two cleated aluminium wheels attached. On the left side of the body, to the front, is a disc with an offset rod communicating via a link, with the adjacent wheel to propel the sprinkler.
The wheel on the other side has bent piece of metal acting as a ratchet to prevent the sprinkler rolling backwards.
The water is distributed by a rotating unit protruding from the top of the body and has stainless steel tubes with outlet holes on the ends. There is a round plate to adjust the spray direction on top.
There is text on the body and the adjuster plate.

Historical information

This F. J. Rice tractor sprinkler was owned and used by Thomas Chedzey on his Eight Road Orchard and home. The sprinkler may have been used to both water the lawns around the home and the trees in the orchard. The sprinkler was attached to a house and the water pressure not only activated the moving sprinkler head but also the wheels which moved the sprinkler forward. The hose was also used to limit how far the sprinkler could move.
