Overview

Rectangular jarrah table with bevelled edges, supported by six turned legs. The four corner legs have modern alloy castors attached. There is a drawer on either end with two circular brass handles on an octagonal base plate, with a flower motif in the centre. One of the handles is not original. Both drawers have a locking mechanism but no key.

Historical information

This table was purchased by the Armadale-Kelmscott Roads Board and was made in Western Australia from Western Australian jarrah. It was used by Road Board committees in the original Jull Street Roads Board building, and the later shire and city administration buildings. In 2006, it was transferred to the recently established Birtwistle Local Studies Library, where it was used by people doing research.

The table was used in Armadale at the Armadale Kelmscott Road Board Offices (c1920-1961), the Shire of Armadale & Kelmscott offices (1961-1985) and the City of Armadale Administration building (1985-2006) before it was transferred to History House.
Statement of significance

This object is part of a collection of items that represent the role that local government has played in providing services to its local community. The City of Armadale was formed in 1894 as the Kelmscott Road Board and has grown from a time when it only provide roads and drains to today when the City provides a wide range of services including waste collection, libraries, museum, parks, sporting facilities, building licenses, environmental services, public events, street lighting, ranger services and community facilities.
