Calvert's Carbolic Toothpaste lid
c. 1882round white ceramic lid with black transfer decoration and text. Base of container is missing.
An English chemist, Mr Grace Calvert came up with the idea in 1880 of using carbolic acid to clean teeth. It was very effective, but carbolic acid is also a caustic and poisonous substance.
This lid was found in the Greenough River to the north of the Convict Bridge on 17/06/2023.

This object shows evidence of an awareness for personal hygiene at Greenough. It is also indicative of the Greenough River being used in the 1880s as a place to dispose of household rubbish.
