Historical information

Palmyra Primary School was officially opened by Mr T. Wynne-Kinnear on 30 June 1913. Originally held in the Palmyra Mechanics Institute Hall on the corner of Tamar and Carrington Streets. The Education Department leased the hall during the day for £12 per year. The original Head Teacher was Mrs McDonald, who had one assistant. There were 19 children enrolled. An increase in enrolments necessitate the construction of a new school and in 1915 contracts were called for the construction on the site of McKimmie Road and Aurelian Street. The two classroom school was built by Mr G. Lithgo for a contract prize of £2200 and was completed on the 25th of October 1915. 60 children were enrolled with still only two teachers employed. Things remained the same until 1922, when over 100 children were enrolled and more extensions were necessary.
