Overview

This black and white photograph features a drawing of the single storey hospital building of St. John of God Hospital. The building has a wrap-around verandah with turned timber posts and a trellis feature under the eaves. Also under the verandah eaves are the words 'Cottage Hospital'. The building has a steeply pitched roof, three chimenys and six large windows, as well as a double timber front door.
Written on the roof are the words: 'St. John of God - First Catholic Hospital in Western Australia'.

Historical information

The first convent and hospital of the Sisters of St John of God was built in 1897 and opened in 1898. The cottage hospital had three wards and could accommodate thirty patients.

This photograph documents the design of the first St John of God Hospital in Subiaco, which was the first Catholic Hospital in Western Australia. Although now demolished, the hospital continues to function on this site.
