Historical information

The floor clamp was a part of a set of tools available for use by members of the Bedfordale community who were building their own homes in the 1940s to 1960s. The tools were kept at the home of Mr Sid Buggins who would lend them out to who ever needed them to build their home. The Dowell family used the tools to build their first home in Bedfordale. William Wibberly was the last person to use the floor clamp in 1960 when he built his home.
The tool represents a time when housing design and specifications were at level that allowed people to build their own homes. Over time as more and more regulations came in and house designs became more complex less people were capable of building their own home and professional builders were required to ensure buildings met state and council building codes and the needs of insurance companies.
