COOLGARDIE SAFE - GALVANISED FRAME, HESSIAN COVER
Box shaped frame of flat galvanised iron, resting in low galvanised iron tray. Central section of sides of frame is filled in with hessian cloth stitched to holes in the frame. One side of safe, constructed in the same way, opens as a door with a slotting type catch on the left hand side. Inside safe has two shelves and top of safe has a deep recession to hold water. Flaps of towelling were placed with one end in this water and the other touching the hessian which became quite wet. As the air evaporated the water from the hessian cooled items inside the safe.
