The Renown Needle Book
c. 1920 - 1925German made needle storage booklet entitled 'The Renown Needle Book'. It opens horizontally to house rows of nickel-plated hand sewing needles wrapped in protective packets or threaded loose into a paper holder.
The front cover features a central black and white illustration of the British ship, H.M.S. Renown, with pale blue sea below and light sky above. The British white ensign flag is flying towards the rear of the ship.
The image is surrounded by a decorative, curved red border with gold and black infilled areas creating a straight edge, outside of which is a blue border. The text 'The Renown Needle Book' is printed in matching red ink across the graphic, while the word 'RENOWN" is printed in black above the lower blue border in the centre. The word 'GERMANY' is printed in black in the lower left of the blue border.
There are five packets of different gauge needles on the left of the open booklet. The paper is dark grey and the labels are cream and gold. On the far right, there is a rose pink piece of paper with two raised areas through which several loose needles are threaded. The inside background is aqua with a cream decorative border in from the edges.
The back cover features a depiction of Prince Albert (later King George VI) wearing his World War One Royal Air Force Flight Lieutenant uniform and cap, standing in front of the British white ensign flag.
Paper-folder needle booklets featuring patriotic and contemporary cultural themes peaked heavily in production during the post-World War One era. Many were made in Germany where the novelty printing and manufacturing sector that exported extensively to English-speaking markets.
This example features Prince Albert (His Royal Highness, Duke of York and later King George VI) in his Royal Air Force service uniform and the pre-dreadnought battleship, H.M.S. Renown, which was launched in 1895 and famously served as a flagship in the Royal Navy fleet.
