The Army and Navy Needle Book - 1
c. 1920 - 1930Japanese made needle storage booklet entitled 'The Army and Navy Needle Book'. It opens horizontally to house rows of nickel-plated hand sewing needles wrapped in protective packets or threaded loose into a paper holder.
The front cover features a colourful illustration of a grey dreadnought warship powering through the blue green ocean alongside an American bald eagle carrying an olive branch atop an early two engined biplane. The clouds behind are a light pink-peach colour and there are blue skies behind.
There is a decorative gold and fine black line border around the central image, outside of which is a blue border.
The phrase 'The Army and Navy Needle Book' is printed with red capitals and black lower case letters across the top. The words 'MADE IN JAPAN' appear in white in the lower right of the blue border. There is a large tear in the upper right of the front cover.
There are three packets of different gauge needles on the left of the open booklet. The paper is black and the labels are cream and gold. One packet appears to be missing from the extreme left hand side. On the right, there is a folded piece of black paper with two raised areas through which several loose needles are threaded. The inside background is buff coloured with an orange border and fine line orange decoration in the centre. On the left upper area, the words 'Silver Steel' are written in matching orange letters.
The back cover features a colourful depiction of five needles encased within a cream, red and blue motif with the words 'HIGHEST DIAMOND DRILLED EYED SHARPS SEWING NEEDLES'. This sits on a black bacground with an ornate green and red border. A cream coloured price sticker reading '"PRICE ONE SHILLING' in red is stuck to the left hand edge, but is creased and coming off at the bottom.
Paper-folder needle booklets featuring patriotic and contemporary cultural themes peaked heavily in production during the post-World War One era. Many were made in Germany where the novelty printing and manufacturing sector that exported extensively to English-speaking markets. However, this example was made in Japan.
