Promissory note written for William Howe
1870hand-written note using pencil on paper, with later ink notation. The paper has a torn edge and four holes.
Not much is known about J.C. Brodie. He was employed as Clerk of Petty Sessions at Greenough 1867-68, and then as Scab Inspector 1869-76.
William Howe was an expiree working at Greenough c1865-73.
"The Island" is the name of a farm on the Back Flats at Greenough.

This note is interesting in that the free man writing it is using the honorific "Mr" to address an expiree.
