ORAL HISTORY (AUDIO): XANTHIS, POPPY
2009Born in North Perth in 1929, Poppy Xanthis would come to live and work in Subiaco in 1950s following her marriage. She worked at Kalaf Fruit shop at 137 – 9 Rokeby Road for over forty years. During this interview she speaks of her memories of Subiaco from a child’s perspective on visiting the suburb to meet other Greek families. She also speaks of her impressions of the suburb on coming to live as an adult. She describes the family business of Kalaf’s Fruit Shop and the strong Greek community that resided in the area and contributed to the business area associated with Rokeby road. By recalling the strong sense of community in the area and the many changes that she has seen she highlights Subiaco a city in change.
