Overview

Digital copy of black and white photo of the bust of a bearded man in suit with buttoned up waistcoat, white shirt and tie with pearl(?) stud. The photo is oval and has been adhered to cardboard backing which has been cut roughly. The reverse is dark grey. Hugh Ernest Hamilton, Architect of Perth was responsible for the design of the Returned Soldiers Memorial in Subiaco. NOTE: Missing September 2018

Historical information

Ernest Hugh Hamilton was responsible for the design of the Subiaco Fallen Soldiers Memorial at the corner of Hamersley and Rokeby Roads. It was completed and unveiled in 1923. Hamilton's son, John Ernest Hamilton, served in the First World War. He enlisted at the age of 18 in 1917 and returned to Australia in 1919.
Ernest Hugh Hamilton died aged 54. He was walking to catch a ferry (the Zephyr) to South Perth at abt 8.20 on 26 June 1928 when he walked along the jetty and straight into the water. He was recovered, unconscious, and taken to RPH where he died about 20 mins later. He had resided in Harold Street, Highgate with his wife.
