Historical information

The Silver War Badge was awarded to members of the armed forces of the British Empire who had served since 1914 and had been discharged due to age, sickness and wounds that rendered them physically unfit for service. Officers who retired or relinquished their commissions were also awarded the badge. The badge was first issued in 1916 and awarded retrospectively to those who had been discharged since August 1914. It was designed to be worn on civilian clothes for others to recognise that individuals wearing them had served in the military.
