BOTTLE, GREEN GLASS - ESSENCE OF COFFEE AND CHICORY

c. 1900
Overview

A rectangular green glass bottle that looks somewhat turquoise.

The base is square with a raised indent going into the bottle. The body of the bottle tapers slightly outwards somewhat before forming a very sharp shoulder. The nect of the bottle is cylindrical that tapers in to the opening. The opening has some finishing that could have been used for grip.

The face and base of the bottle are moulded words and text. Front reads [ESSENCE OF / COFFEE & CHICORY]. Base reads [6 / 6].

Historical information

The liquid in the bottle contained a coffee and chicory syrup which was used to make a hot or cold drink or to flavour cakes and icing.

Made popular in the depression era the mix was a cheap alternative to coffee and its taste became common in households across Australia. It is still sold around the world with similar imagery on the bottle.
