Richard Henry Chase lowered his age to enlist in 16 Battalion AIF. He was killed in action at Gabba Tepe on 28 April 1915 and at age 54 is believed to have been the oldest Australian killed at Gallipoli.

Contextual Information

The Chase Family group of artefacts and medals including William St Lucien Chase's Victoria Cross were acquired under the Australian Cultural Gifts Program in 2002. This display is located in the Pre 1914 Gallery at the Australian Army Museum of Western Australia. The original Victoria Cross of Lucien Chase and his other medals are displayed in the Victoria Cross Hall of Valour beside replicas of two other Victoria Crosses awarded for service in Afghanistan.
