The Governor's Challenge was a series of golf matches played between a team formed the West Australian Governor of the time and a MGGC team.
Apart from the results recorded for this event there have been many other references of matches between the Governor's team and MGGC. The Council of Management minutes contain several mentions of visits by the Governor's teams in the 1970s and 1980s, generally associated with a meal before the match. Teams generally seem to have consisted of 16 players from each side, played in a 4BBB format.
Newsletter September 1997 reported that a Governor's team (headed by Michael Jeffery) which Melville won 6 to 1.
Newsletter June 1999 reported that a Governor's team (headed by Michael Jeffery) which Melville won 6 and a half to 1 and a half.
Newsletter December 2000 reported that a Governor's team (headed by Lt. General John Sanderson AC) which Melville won 4 and a half to 3 and a half.
Where available, results from other matches have been added to the list of results, although they do not appear on the trophy.
Also of relevance is that the club's constitution entitles 'any person … who is the Governor of Western Australia' to honorary membership. This entitlement has existed well back into the club's history.
