The Lefties versus Righties Event is an informal annual men's club event conducted between teams of left and right-handed golfers, currently selected from the Saturday competition.
Newsletter May 1974 notes that the event was conceived by foundation members Ron Thom and Jack Bennett with Ron 'the instigator of the L. Ava-Tory Trophy' which also bears his name. The newsletter note also unfortunately announced the passing of Ron: 'Always a cheerful and outspoken character around the Clubhouse, particularly the Sprigg (sic) Bar'.
As can be seen from the results, there are several years where the event was either not conducted or the results not recorded, but the day does create a good degree of rivalry and merriment.
Traditionally, the losing captain has the dishonour of having the trophy hung ceremoniously around his neck. The various attachments display this aspect.
The ealiest dated 'circa 2005' show Club Captain Ian Rickwood, Leftie's Captain Rob Smith with the trophy hung ceremoniously around his neck, and Rightie's Captain Peter Boggs on the right.
In 2022 it was losing Righties Captain Simon Busby.
In 2026 it was Lefties Captain Derek Bickford accompanied by victorious Righties Captain Tom Colella
