Lefties vs Righties

The Lefties versus Righties Event is an informal annual men's club event conducted between teams of left and right-handed golfers, currently selected from the Saturday competition.

 

Newsletter May 1974 notes that the event was conceived by foundation members Ron Thom and Jack Bennett with Ron 'the instigator of the L. Ava-Tory Trophy' which also bears his name. The newsletter note also unfortunately announced the passing of Ron: 'Always a cheerful and outspoken character around the Clubhouse, particularly the Sprigg Bar'.

 

As can be seen from the results, there are several years where the event was either not conducted or the results not recorded, but the day does create a good degree of rivalry and merriment.

 

The attachment 'circa 2005' exhibits the novelty nature of the trophy. In this photograph it is assumed that the day was won by the Righties. The people in the picture are club Captain Ian Rickwood, Leftie's Captain Rob Smith with the trophy hung ceremoniously around his neck, and Rightie's Captain Peter Boggs on the right.
