About organisation
Broome Public Library respectfully acknowledges that it is located on the land of the Yawuru people. We pay our respects to the traditional custodians of this country.
The Broome Public Library houses the Local history collection "Broome and Beyond". The collection has an abundance of information ranging from First Nations People who walked on country to Pearl divers from Japan, Koepang, Filipines, South Sea Islands and Britain etc. It covers "John Sherlock Brooking" who lead the Kimberley Survey Expedition in 1883, to map the townsite of Broome and also encompasses the extensive sheep/cattle industry that feed the troops in WW2 and consistently exported to Britain and beyond. This eclectic research/study collection rangers from Newspapers to oral histories along with some detailed maps spanning the Kimberley coast. There are first hand accounts of events along with a plethora of ephemera covering the social history of Broome e.g. Shinju Matsuri Festival programs and Art Award entries. "Broome and Beyond" is an easily accessible, secure collection of Broome and the Kimberley region. The Broome Public Library safeguards this precious collection for the posterity of all members of the Broome community.
