About organisation
The National Archives' collection contains records about key events and decisions that have shaped Australian history. Our records connect you with the stories and people that define our past, shape our future and help safeguard our democracy.
Under the Archives Act 1983, the National Archives gives the community, researchers and government access to these original records.
We have an office in every Australian state or territory capital city.

With more than 40 million items, our collection mainly includes Australian Government records from Federation in 1901 to now. We hold records about military service, immigration, First Australians and much more.
While most of our records are paper files, we also have photographs, audiovisual records, sound recordings, maps and plans, and digital records.
The Western Australia Office holds records documenting 20th-century migration and migrants, defence service personnel, shipping and customs, lighthouses and post offices, scientific research, space exploration and many other aspects of Western Australia’s history.
