Contextual Information

The Italian prisoners of war files comprise dossiers that include details of the prisoner of war such as place of birth, location of capture, rank and position, and date of entry to Australia. The files also include restriction orders, identity cards and other correspondence relating to Italian POWs during World War II. The correspondence often includes details of the farms on which prisoners were employed as well as reports on their behaviour and conduct written by farmers.
The files have a file number with a 'PWI' or 'PWIX' prefix, but are held in alphabetical order.
These records were created by the Investigation Branch, Western Australia in response to the National Security Act of 1939 and National Security (Prisoner of War) Regulations.
The dossiers include black and white photographs of the prisoner’s left profile and face on. Each photograph also includes a POW’s PWI or PWIX prefixed number.
The National Archives series K1145 consists of 4827 Italian prisoner of war files.
