PHOTOGRAPH: 'THE SUBIACO GUN'
The black and white photograph shows a 77mm German field gun captured by the 11th Battalion AIF during the Great War. The gun is on wheels and would have required many men to move it around the battlefield. It was mounted in the Subiaco Municipal Gardens. The number shown on the gun is 5806. It was one of a large number of trophies distributed among Australian states by the then Australian War Museum (later the Australian War Memorial). It was dispatched to Subiaco in 1922. Some of the wording on the gun reads: 'German Field Gun - The 11th Batt AIF' 'Dept of Defence - [Melbourne]'
