PLAQUE - HMS LONDON

Overview

Base is a pentagon with a border of twisted gilt rope, white base coat with a vertical red sword in the centre. The red sword and gilt rope are raised above the white base.

There is what appears to be a crown on the top flat bar. There are some colours along the rim of the base of the crown that resemble gems. In order the colours are red, green, green, and red.

Historical information

During WWII Armadale hosted visiting sailors from warships docked at Fremantle. In particular the crew from a British cruiser HMS London between the 17th of December 1944 and the 13th of January 1945 Armadale were billeted in the area.

This plaque was given to the Roads Board as a gift of thanks to the community for hosting the crew. The crest was held in the City of Armadale archives.

Statement of significance

HIGH
During WWII part of Armadales contribution to the war effort was to host the crews of visiting naval warships. Between December 1944 and January 1945 the district hosted the crew of the HMS London.

As part of the hospitality the district put on a ball and billeted the HMS London crew.

The crew would later give then Armadale Roads Board the plaque as a gesture of thanks for the hospitality.
