PEN, METAL NIB - AMERICAN PENCIL CO NY

c. 1895
Overview

Long cylindrical wood and metal ink pen. End of wooden part has broken off. Textured wood of reds and pale yellowish brown. A metal nib with small rectangular shaped air hole is on the end.

The metal part has been tarnished.

Historical information

This style of pen was used before the invention of roller ball pens made commerically successful by the biro. The pen required the metal nib be dipped in ink before drawn over paper in the required shape.

The manufacturer, American Pencil Co NY was founded in 1860 in New Jersey, United States. The pen would have been imported to Australia along with pencils and other writing implements.

The Butcher family were early settlers in the City of Armadale region. The first members arrived in Perth around the mid-1980s as part of indenture programs or to join family.
