TIE PRESS: WOOD

Overview

Varnished wooden tie press. Consists of two rectangular boards of wood with each with 2 metal straps, fixed to the boards with 2 screws front and 3 screws on the back. The metal straps are joined on the non-opening side by a square of wire. The straps on the top are sprung with a groove at the end of them on the opening edge. There are squares of wire on the the back straps on the opening edge which fit over the top straps, into the grooves, to enable the boards to be pressed together. The straps have rolled ends to enable the wire squares to be affixed. There is a printed trademark on the top in red, white, black and gold with 'St George' in script across a red banner, a picture of St George and the Dragon within a circle underneath, and below that a curved ribbon with 'SEAL OF EXCELLENCE' on it. On both back straps are 'MADE IN ENGLAND' and 'PATENT No 263317.

Historical information

The Tie press belonged to Mr Allman's father, Cyril Allman, and was used byhim to keep his Masonic tie in good condition. He apparently used to place his tie in the press as soon as he took it off after Masonic meetings. This object is similar to a clothes press, but instead was used to flatten a gentleman’s tie. The press ensured that the tie remained straight and unwrinkled.
