Historical information

Pioneer Park in Bunbury, Western Australia, is a public open space that originally served as the town's first public burial ground.

The site was gazetted as the original Bunbury Public Cemetery in 1847 to serve the growing settlement's early pioneers.

It was initially controlled by the Church of England before being handed over to the local council due to overcrowding and public health concerns.

The burial ground was closed in 1925 when a new cemetery was established on the town's outskirts (later moving toward Carey Park). The bodies buried at the site were left in place, and the grounds were converted into a public park.

During the mid-1980s, surviving headstones were relocated to Bunbury's newer cemetery and arranged in dedicated pioneer rows, while a commemorative structure and timber plaque were placed at Pioneer Park to honour those interred at the original site.
