Overview

The badge was a silver-coloured disk with the obverse depicting a relief image of a woman and part of a laurel leaf with the words “For Australia”. The reverse reads “Issued by the C’wlth Govt”. Suspended by two securing rings is a bar to which stars were added, with each star indicating one death.

Historical information

The World War 2 Mothers’ and Widows’ Badge was issued to the mothers and/or widows of members of the Royal Australian Navy, Australian Imperial Force (including the Australian Army Nursing Service), Citizens Military Forces, or Royal Australian Air Force who was killed in action or died of wounds or other causes as a result of service.

The Army Museum has a number of WW2 Mothers' and Widows' badges in its collection. Each bears a unique serial number but the registers recording the initial recipients have not been located.
