Overview

Lexie Stella Grundmann (nee Gibbs) was born on the 9th of November 1934 at St Laurence’s Hospital, Subiaco and was raised on Nicholson Road. In this interview she talks about her childhood memories, games played, dances held and shopping on Rokeby Road. She recalls the impact of WWII on Subiaco, from the soldiers marching past her house and food stamp trading, to billeting American soldiers and the sense of community within Subiaco. She discusses her schooling years and the lack of male teachers and how she came to work at Sands and MacDougall’s. Lexie details how long the family home took to build and expresses her displeasure as older houses are knocked down.
