Historical information

Bernard Daniel Rider born came from England to Ballarat. Bernard married Fanny Theresa Morris from Sydney, New South Wales on the 11th January 1882 in Surry Hills, New South Wales. Moved to Western Australia c.1903. Lived at 'Na Valli' 21 Bernard Street, Claremont.

Bernard and Fanny had four children Dudley (b.1887), Stanley (b.1890 - d.1891), Herbert (b.1882 - d.1895) and Hilda (b.1884 - d.1966).

Bernard was an assistant stationmaster and then stationmaster at Claremont Station from c.1912-1926. Seconded to the Western Australian Government Railways (WAGR) because of his knowledge of animals. At the time, show animals were transported to the Claremont Showground by train. Lectured First Aid to railway workers. Bernard was also a jeweller, accountant and toy maker. Owned a racehorse, drove a phaeton. Apparently an aristocratic looking gentleman and a stylish dresser.

In January 1921, Bernard sustained severe injuries to his back and head at the Claremont Railway Station. He attempted to close a door on a departing train. The increasing speed of the train threw him off his feet and he was thrown between two carriages. Luckily he managed to grip a stanchion and hang there until the train was pulled up.

Fanny Theresa Morris born c.1858 died 24th March 1922 aged 64.
Bernard Daniel Rider born c.1862 died 16th April 1929 aged 67.
