Entry on p27 in Patrick’s Common Place Book dated 15 December 1849
How softly dawns the waking morn
While gentle zephfrs breathe around,
But nought can soothe the heart forlorn;
Or wake thee from thy sleep profound.
This is thy natal day, my child;
But thou dost slumber in thy tomb.
The couch is in a dreary wild;
And curtained with death’s deepest gloom.
Thy father’s tears, sweet sleeper, flow;
But tears can’t melt death’s icy chain;
Nor make thee feel the vital glow,
And call thee to this world again.
No, thou shall not return to me.
But soon, sweet one, I’ll come to thee –
thou shall not sleep alone.
Born on 15 December 1844 at Albany
Fifth child of Patrick and Mary Taylor
Died 15 April 1847 aged 28 months
