Beehive Milk Jug - Beswick
c. 1950Large white milk jug, ribbed ceramic, one handle, floral pattern transfer.
Front side of jug: An adhesive transfer of two burgundy stemmed roses (one open, one in bud) with a spray of white flowers, green leaves.
Back of jug: An adhesive transfer of one stemmed rose and white flowers with green leaves.
The jug features a horizontally ribbed texture that mimics the stacked coils of a traditional skep (beehive).
Longton, Stoke-on-Trent-based pottery maker John Beswick Ltd, originally J W Beswick, was founded in 1894 by James Wright Beswick and his sons John and Gilbert. The company was sold to Doulton & Co Ltd in 1969. In 2002, the plant shuttered, and the John Beswick brand (name and product design rights) was sold in 2004. The John Beswick name is now owned by Dartington Crystal.

A 'beehive' Beswick milk jug is a ceramic creamer made by the English pottery company John Beswick Ltd during the 1950s, and features a distinctive rounded, ribbed body shaped like a beehive.
