powder flask

c. 1860
Overview

powder flask made of zinc and brass

Historical information

This powder flask was found about 1971 in a ruined building at Central Greenough. The finder discovered it along with other munitions tools in an iron strongbox with the royal coat of arms on it and a timber chest under a collapsed limestone wall. He kept the discovery quiet, because of concern the police might confiscate the weapons (swords and a pistol set in a wooden box destroyed by termites were mentioned). These weapons were later sold.

Contextual Information

Because of the arms on the strong-box it is likely these items are associated with a former Policeman based at Greenough. It is probable that the box was found at Mill Farm (the former Greenough Hotel) as that had out-buildings and cellar (now demolished), and former landlords were policemen. The objects would have been put away as they were obsolete, and, at that time, of no commercial value.
