CYCLONE DAMAGE, 'MOSCOW FARM', TOODYAY

1943
Subcollections
Overview

Small black and white photo of tree damage in a bush area after a cyclone.

Historical information

Due to the similarity of the cyclone damage shown in this photo to another photo in the Shire of Toodyay collection (2014.239), which also has a Chitty provenance (and an identical day and month inscribed), it is believed the same event has been photographed which actually occurred on 15 March 1943.
It is now considered likely the location of this photo is 'Moscow Farm', the property owned by the Chitty family at the time, which was situated in the Salt Valley area of Toodyay. The farm was located in a sparsely settled area in the neighbourhood of Warinegaring, between Ten Mile Hill on the Red Hill Road and Clackline. It was situated at the headwaters of the Jimperding Brook.

Contextual Information

The Australian Government's Bureau of Meteorology has a record of a cyclone on March 15, 1943 but not on March 14. 'A cyclone crossed the coast near Lancelin causing extensive damage along a narrow band from Lancelin to the southeast wheatbelt. Buildings were unroofed, telegraph poles were blown down and roads were blocked by falling trees.'
