Southalls Biblical Herbarium - Teaching Aide 1897
1897Wooden box containing a number of cardboard boxes and glass containers. Inside cover reads 'Southalls Biblical Herbarium, seventy specimens of the plants, fruits, seeds, gums etc mentioned in the bible. A Descriptive Pamphlet giving complete biblical references to the same is enclosed. Southall Bros & Barclay Ltd Birmingham.' Small booklet on the lid 'Plants, Plant Products in the Bible'.
The Biblical Herbarium was produced by the Southhall Brothers in Birmingham England 1897. An herbarium is a collection of dried plant specimens and were widely used in the study of natural sciences, pharmacy and medicine.
This particular herbarium was used in Sunday Schools, which were formed in Western Australia through the efforts of Mrs and Miss Irwin and the Colonial Chaplain, the Revd J B Wittenoom in 1837. The Sunday School Association was formed in WA in 1888.

The Biblical Herbarium has been described by Dr John Topham from the University of Leeds as a three dimensional illustrated bible. Its use in Sunday Schools means it can be used to explore education and formal learning through Sunday Schools as well as being an evocative object when discussing science and religion.
