Travelling Communion Case

c. 1910
Overview

Wooden Travelling Communion Case.
Carved wood in three panels with hinged brass doors, Cruifix of brass metal in centre.
Slight cracking on centre panel and slight black marking-stains on same panel base. In the case was a compartment (forming the base of the carved section) and in this were kept a small chalice and paten together with wine and water cruets, a silver wafer container, and two small candlesticks, together with some linen. The case was folded up and locked (the lock is still visible) and was carried by a leather handle.

Historical information

This piece of woodwork is part of a travelling communion case which would have been made by either Mowbrays or Wippell's of London (more likely the former) and brought out to Western Australia by Canon John Frewer in his time as Warden of the Bush Brotherhood of St Boniface at Williams in the Diocese of Bunbury. He was the Warden from 1919 until 1929 when he became the second Bishop of North West Australia. He used the case until about the 1960's
