Cheer-Up Society Hostel stainless steel teapot
1944Cheer-Up Society Hostel large capacity, commercial, stainless steel teapot with hinged lid. It has a circular base, and sides which taper inwards slightly towards the top where the circular lid is fitted. There is a round knob on the lid to lift it, a curved handle and a long cylindrical tapered pouring spout.
There is a rectangular shaped piece of metal tubing attached to the top of the teapot on the opposite side to the handle to steady the weight of the teapot when carrying or pouring tea from it. There is a shaped piece of metal on the top of the handle which serves as a thumb grip, again to steady the weight, which given the sheer size of the teapot would be quite substantial when full.
On one side are the words 'Cheer-Up Society Hostel' and on the underside are the maker's marks, which includes the date of manufacture, November 1944.
The South Australian Cheer-up Society was established in 1914 and comprised volunteer women workers who offered support to soldiers through the distribution of comforts, provision of meals and entertainment. The society also wished to shield soldiers from alcohol and disreputable city entertainments such as bars and brothels. In World War One, they established the Cheer-Up Hut and in World War Two, the Cheer-Up Hostel.
Badges and pins were sold in an effort to raise funds.
South Australia was very active on the home front during wartime, having several fundraising charities unique to the state. These included the School's Patriotic Fund, Fighting Forces Comforts Fund, Violet Day and the Cheer Up Society.
A Cheer Up Hut or Hostel was a place for men to eat, rest, socialise and either recover or prepare for service. The volunteers were known as 'The Cheer-Ups'. They prepared and served meals, after which they danced with the men.
