Contextual Information

Marion Ellen Reynolds was born in 1871 in Vasse to Joseph Gardiner "Josh" Reynolds and Mary Ellen Morgan of Wonnerup, the sixth of 12 children.

In 1889, Marion married Alfred John "Jack" Bussell (1865 – 1940) in the Anglican Church in Busselton. Marion was given away by her father and her attendants included her two sisters, Carrie and Laura Reynolds, and friends Kate and Clair Layman. Mr Charles H. Layman acted as best man. After their marriage they took up their future home at Wallcliffe at Margaret River. Marion and Jack had two children – Alfred Joseph (1891 – 1918) and Marion Frederica (1893 – 1893 aged 6 weeks) – their son becoming First Lieutenant in the 31st Field Artillery, was awarded the Military Cross for gallantry in the field and was killed in action in France in 1918.

After a very short illness, Marion died at Wallcliffe in October 1895 at the age of only 24 years. She is buried in the Busselton Pioneer Cemetery.
