Historical information

By late 1951, the Education Department considered it ‘desirable that the mill community have its own school’. At this time, there were about 100 children living in Donnelly River and in 1952, there would be 39 children of school age.
Bunnings submitted a quote for £8,203 for the school, shelter sheds, paving, septic tank, fencing and standard quarters. The school initially comprised of; two classrooms (both 20ft x 30ft), an office (15ft x 10ft), two storerooms (5ft x 5ft) and (7 1⁄2 ft x 8 1⁄2 ft), two timber shelter sheds (20ft x 14ft), asbestos girls’ and boys’ toilets, paving, septic tank, post and wire fencing to enclose the school with two cyclone gates.
The school opened 2 February 1953 with 34 students on the first day. There were no desks and the children sat on the floor using chairs as desks. The first teachers were Laurie Phillips as Head Teacher & Laurie’s wife Elizabeth (Betty) as the Assistant Teacher.
