Historical information

In 1948, Bunning Brothers Pty Ltd and the State Housing Commission entered an agreement to provide workers’ housing at Donnelly River under the provisions of the 1945 Commonwealth-State Rental Housing Scheme. By June 1951, the State Housing Commission had built 28 cottages (Cottages 1 to 28) and Bunning Brothers subsequently built another ten, eight in the existing “U” pattern and two near the sports oval. There are currently 37 cottages at Donnelly River Mill.

Cottages were either painted externally or were simply oiled weatherboards. A timber tank stand and water tank were fixtures at the rear of the cottage. Interiors were lined with a variety of materials, including timber to dado height, fibrous plaster, plasterboard and asbestos cement sheets. Each house lot was bounded by a low picket fence at the front and tall timber paling fences at the sides and rear. Septic toilets were installed in the cottages c1968, (before this, pan toilets were located about 20 yards behind each house).

Contextual Information

These cottages represent the social aspect of a timber community located in the Karri forest for many families for over 30 years. Many of the families remain within the district and retain association.
The cottages also have historic value in that they are a representation of the type of settlement housing located in a timber milling area and built in the 1950's post WW11.
