Contextual Information

"The design of this sofa is an alternative to the rail end type of sofa with a solid timber board back. Possibly the lack of a wood turning lathe to produce turnings influenced the design choice or it may have been due to familiarity with a joined frame and available time. Typically the timber sizes were commonly available and being used for buildings and housing." (ref: p. 380 Colonial Furniture of Western Australia 1829-1910 by Timothy Harris)
