Albany Forts Watercolour Painting
1989Watercolour painting of the Princess Royal Fortress garrison buildings set behind glass.
Commissioned by Lionel and Max Berryman, artist Maurice Kennedy painted the fortress as it looked prior to restoration; as a reminder of it poor condition. All three served at the Princess Royal Fortress during the Second World War.
Maurice Montrose Kennedy (b. Albany, WA. 18/01/1917; d. Nedlands, WA 20/01/2007) was a cousin of the Berryman’s, and a noted artist after winning a Claude Hotchin Art Prize in 1954:
“Mr. Kennedy is one of our younger Western Australian artists, who is showing great promise in his art and is making much headway, he is employed by one of our largest emporiums in Perth, as a designer in the laying out and alterations to their vast premises. He too has won the Claude Hotchin Art Prize for water colours, he won the prize in 1954.This picture [“Reabold Hill”] now hangs in the Collie Art Gallery. Maurice Kennedy has shown his work frequently in Perth and recently held a one-man exhibition with marked success. This young Western Australian is well-worth watching, he will do well in the future and should go far.”
Taken from the 1955 catalogue, Written by Claude Hotchin.
