'In Commemoration' fundraising button 1919 - large size

1919
Overview

Circular fundraising badge or button produced during World War One to recognise those who had bought the complete set of Commonwealth Button Fund buttons between 1914-1919. It is made from printed paper between a tin base and celluloid cover.
It features a depiction of an Australian soldier riding a horse wearing his uniform and bandolier, waving his hat towards the naval ships in the harbour as in farewell.
The words 'Commonwealth Button Fund' appear in brown letters in the border at the top of the central image, '1914 1919' on either side and 'In Commemoration' below.
The badge appears to have faded over time and is now mostly cream, brown and grey in colour.
The reverse has a metal back with a void into which a metal pin is secured for attachment.

Historical information

The Commonwealth Button Fund was established in mid-1915, with the first Button Day being held in November of that year, supporting the people of Belgium. Over the course of the next 6 years, 33 Button Days were held raising money for a variety of patriotic and charitable causes including the Australian, British and French Red Cross, Hospitals, allied countries, current serving men and women, discharged, wounded and disabled servicemen and women, and their families. The buttons were sold in trams, buses, at railways stations and at rallies to raise money for the stated cause.

This large button was issued to people who could show that they had purchased all 27 patriotic buttons produced by the Commonwealth button Fund between 1914-1919. They had to send the set of 27 buttons to their local authorities to prove their claim, after which they were returned with the addition of this button. It was issued in September 1919.
