Historical information

The waterlogged soils are losing the oxygen and soil fauna. Vegetation is almost non-existent, the subsoils are collapsing, (being reconstructed back to a base material). Watershed from the surrounding area cannot make its way into the river channel, but ponds in the sunken areas and moves along the outer edges until it joins a creek and can make its way into the channel. As the subsoils sink (collapse/reconstruct), the stored soluble salts in the soil, are forced upwards and outwards as the solids (soil particles) sink to the bottom of the waterlogged soil (base soils). From the research conducted by Drs Adrian Peck, David Williamson and E. Bettenay of CSIRO from 1965 to 1968, it was found that the quantity of salt stored in the soil from the surface to the base materials, varied from 2,300 tonnes per hectare in the high rainfall zones to 1,500 tonnes per hectare in medium rainfall and 900 tonnes in a light rainfall zone. Hence we can appreciate the amount of salt that is stored in the subsoils.
