Typewriter, Remington-Chartres Business Services
c. 1933This is a ‘Remington Rand’ Model 1 Portable Typewriter, although it has only a ‘Remington’ decal. The machine was assembled in Australia for Chartres Ltd, from parts supplied by the Remington Typewriter Corporation USA. A decal on the back of the machine reads ‘Australian Built’.
Chartres Business Service imported these machines, placed the decal on the front, and sold them all around Australia.
Chartres Business Services was by far the biggest seller of typewriters in Australia in the first half of the 20th century. And the typewriters that the company sold were almost exclusively Remingtons. These include Remingtons assembled in Australia and labelled “Australian built”. At that time, while still operating as Chartres Business Services, the company was legally known as Remington Rand Chartres.
The Chartres business was known to have operated from 375 Collins Street Melbourne.
