Black and white photograph of men of the Royal Navy marching down Stirling Terrace Friday 8th February 1907. The review or march past was staged as the end to a naval demonstration by officer and crew from three vessels of the Royal Navy from the Australian Station. HMS Powerful, Challenger and Encounter. Shown here is the head of a column (Albany Advertiser 9th Feb 1907) that stretched back to what is now Middleton Loop and included combined ships bands, blue jackets, marines and artillery. Twelve to fifteen hundred men in total. See also P1988.290 linked related images below

Historical information

The full march past was the conclusion to an all day demonstration that commenced with a mock attack conducted by 1500 men from the three visiting ships on imagined enemy positions on the slopes of Mount Melville. The combined force then marched in column around Marine Drive and back through Albany from the top of York Street to the town jetty.
