Medallion issued in Albany to celebrate Queen Victoria's Jubilee in 1887
1887Bronze, double-sided circular medallion issued to commemorate the Golden Jubilee of the reign of Queen Victoria in 1887.
It features a veiled bust of the Queen facing left on the obverse, and text and decorative borders on the reverse. Around the edge of the obverse are the words 'VICTORIA R. JUBILEE'.
On the reverse, there is a central circle in which the word 'Albany' appears, above which are the words 'Western Australia' and below which is the date '1887'.
There are a couple of green coloured blemishes on the medallion due to the copper content oxidising.
The rim of the medallion is smooth and there are no visible maker's marks.
There is a hole in the top of the medallion through which a metal ring is threaded for attachment.
Queen Victoria's golden jubilee in 1887 was celebrated the great enthusiasm throughout the British Empire. It prompted many Australian local governments to issue commemorative medals. This medal was issued in Albany - the first European settlement in Western Australia, established in 1826, two years prior to Perth and Fremantle. A similar medallion was issued by Sir George Shenton, the Mayor of Perth at the time.
