Biography of Jane Delano produced by Schuyler County History
Copper memorial plaque commemorating American nurse Jane Delano
1920Copper memorial plaque in the shape of a shield dedicated to American nurse, Jane Arminda Delano, by Marjorie Lamb. It was registered by the American Tree Association of Washington, D.C.
There are two small holes in the top corners of the plaque for attachment to a concrete plinth.
The name of the maker is impressed into the centre right of the reverse.
A biography of Jane Arminda Delano (March 12 1862 - April 15, 1919) is included as a supplementary file.
The plaque was originally attached to a concrete plinth in front of a memorial tree planted as part of th 16th Street Tree War Memorial in Washington, District of Colombia.
The District of Columbia 16th Street World War One Tree Memorial was dedicated on May 30, 1920 as a tribute to the more than 500 DC residents who perished as a result of The Great War.
Despite the large number of trees planted and memorials attached, the whereabouts of less than 10 of the plaques are known, with most held by the District of Columbia archives.
Having communicated with historians associated with the 16th Street WWI Tree Memorial, it was discovered that Jane Delano had not been listed as an original recipient. The name of the maker on the reverse, Lamb Seal and Stencil Co. of Washington, DC' is also unique to this plaque.
It has been suggested that Marjorie Lamb, whose name appears on the front of the plaque, could have been a family member of the manufacturing company who knew Jane personally. However, this is unproven and still being investigated.
